Apps are the lifeblood of any operating system. Without apps, we can only do so much on platforms like Android on our favorite smartphones. Fortunately, Google Play offers millions of apps, but due to platform restrictions, not every good app can be found on the store. Sometimes, app availability is also restricted on a geographical basis. So the only way to get such apps is by sideloading them.

I use an Ubuntu 14.04 system with ADB to talk to the device and can get to the apply update from the ADB dialog. From the Ubuntu side, I use adb sideload where some filename is a small text file. The file is copied to the Android device. But of course, this fails. The device expects an update file. And this is where I am stuck.

There is no Platform Tools folder on my computer after installing the SDK. Furthermore, windows would not allow the included driver because it was unsigned (wtf) so not sure if I downloaded a bunk Android SDK or if things have drastically changed since this tutorial. Either way, ADB will not initialize and the daemon crashes. I have had it working fine before so maybe I should go find an earlier version. Very frustrating.

However, the main difference is that you can grab the boot.img file from the system image files after you update. You can patch the boot.img file using Magisk to gain root access, which many power users are eager to do after a system update.
Earlier today, HTC tweeted about the Android 7.0 Nougat roll out for the beloved HTC One M9 device. Amidst all this, some device users have been able to capture the OTA and full stock RUU for the same. So hit the download section and grab the M9 Nougat update files. Currently, the unlocked variant of the HTC One M9 has received the OTA and full RUU firmware files. Moreover, HTC announced that AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile & Verizon HTC One M9 variants will receive Nougat early next year (2017).

For TWRP versions lower than 2.8.2.0, the file will be copied to your device to whatever the current storage location is that you have selected in the mount page. It will always be placed in the root of that storage location and named sideload.zip (e.g. /sdcard/sideload.zip) and it will automatically delete / overwrite any existing sideload.zip you may have on your device. As soon as the file is copied to your device, it will automatically be installed. When the install is finished you will be presented with a reboot system button so that you can reboot to test your zip.
TWRP versions 2.8.2.0 and higher will stream the zip from your PC without storing it on your device. If you wish to store the zip on your device for later, you should not use sideload and instead use adb push or some other method to copy the zip to the device.
Note that sideload mode is a separate ADB mode. While in sideload mode, regular ADB commands will not work. Once the zip has been copied to the device and the install starts (or if you hit the cancel button) regular ADB mode will resume.

Once you have those three packages downloaded (Lineage, recovery, Google apps), move the files into the same location as the ADB files you installed in the previous step. Then rename them to simpler things; for example, the recovery file name is very long and tricky (lineage-18.1-20220109-recovery-instantnoodlep.img, for example). Change it to just RECOVERY.img. This will make it easier to find the files later and also save you some command line typing.
